During May of this year 180,600 travelers visited Shenandoah National Park, according to statistics released by Superintendent Robert Jacobsen. Compared to May 1977 which saw 367,300 visitors at the Park, the decrease is 50.8 percent.
Part of the reported decrease may be attributed to new procedures for counting travel. As of January 1, 1978, a new multiplier (2.8 rather than 3.5) is being used for converting vehicles to visitors, and travel on only three secondary roads is being counted.
As measured at Big Meadows, the high temperature for May was 76 degrees and the low was 27 degrees. Precipitation totaled 7.59 inches.
