Alternatively, there are private organizations, including The Nature Conservancy, which make a practice of acquiring endangered lands for their protection and eventual transfer to the National Park System. The quasigovernmental organization, the National Parks Foundation, uses its money for the same purpose.
We would encourage the Administration of Shenandoah National Park, and the National Park Service generally, to abandon the idea of equal value land exchange entirely, and to start considering seriously some other alternatives, including those presented above.
We have been impressed by the strength of the interest and support of people in Rappahannock County for maintaining the integrity of the Park, created over 40 years ago out of the homes and holdings of earlier mountain families.
As supporters of the National Park System, we believe that the Park needs to move now to gain the continuing support of the people by establishing that they take seriously their sacred trust and responsibility to future generations who will ase the Park.
