Sperryville Postmaster Aline B. Johnson has been named Virginia Postmaster of the year for 1979. She was selected from 900 Postmasters across the state. The award was conferred May 21 at the 70th annual convention of the National League of Postmasters, Virginia Branch, held in Williamsburg. Carl Riggs, vice president of the League, made the presentation.
The award cites Mrs. Johnson for outstanding service in her Post Office, her community and in the National League of Postmasters. She is chairman of the Rappahannock Vocational Advisory Committee, Captain for the Piedmont District Heart Campaign, Board member of the Rappahannock County Welfare Department, active member and deacon in Reynolds Memorial Baptist Church.
She is very active in many other volunteer groups. Besides her normal Post Office duties, she has started five stamp clubs in the local elementary school.
Mrs. Johnson was appointed Postmaster at Sperryville in 1974. Earlier this year she received three other awards for outstanding service. When receiving the award, Mrs. Johnson remarked, “Indeed, my cup runneth over, but 1 think you have made a slight mistake. It should read Carson and Aline, I could not have done the work without my betterhalf’s h$lp and understanding. It is a privilege to be a Postmaster in this, the greatest country on earth and a pleasure to be one in Virginia, the most beautiful state in the country.”
