To the editor:
Embarrassing moments has been the subject recently of letters, seemingly directed to the School Board; mainly of their decision not to rehire teachers with criminal records, some in our adjoining county. However, this the subject I want to refer you to, so I’m changing the title to “Embarrassing Sights”.
Recently I was invited by some teachers and students to visit Rappahannock County High School, the same school (but not same place) where my husband and I retired from five years ago; he having been the only custodian there since the opening fourteen years prior and I was employed there for six years. Yes to my regret it is not the same place where we tried, worked hard, spending long hours, not knowing the meaning of a time clock and even sometimes missing our meals in order that the students would have a decent place to earn an education. When the grounds were covered with beautiful white snow, neither were we contented with just a “pig path” to the entrances. One teacher remarked to me, “if your husband would see the school now, he would have a heart attack.”
