as this. The Ledger-Mar and its distinguished reporter, Dave Chandler, have performed an important service by stirring the Administration to action concerning the long-rumored hanky-panky in the Division.
In doing so, they have done what the responsible press is supposed to do. They have, in the tradition of the Washington Post’s handling of the Watergate Affair, focused on a problem of vital public concern and brought it forcibly to official attention. But what they have provided are leads for official exploration; not evidence to support official action. It is up to the authorities to take it from there.
Thus, at least at this juncture, it appears that the Appeal Board’s reversal of the InterRoyal suspension was justified.
But there is a murky cloud of smoke hanging over the Division of Purchases and Supply. What remains now to be seen is whether or not the old wag about “where there is smoke there is fire” holds true in this case. Presumably the array of investigations now in progress will make that determination.
In the meantime, the governor’s management team has gotten the message to build its own cases on firmer ground.
