Flint Hill is the center of the.universe, according to long time resident Herbert S. Barksdale. If Flint Hill is indeed the center, then Mr. Barksdale ranks as leading citizen and unofficial mayor for the center of the universe.
The Rappahannock News’ Man of the Year for 1979 exemplifies the model civic spirit, not only in his Flint Hill community but throughout Rappahannock County.
“He’s one of the most civic minded individuals I've ever met. Herbert Barksdale has done as much or more for Rappahannock than anyoneelse who lives here,” said local attorney James W. Fletcher, a friend of Barksdale’s for almost half a century. “He’s unselfish in giving his time. He’s done so for all of his life."
Born on September 30, 1899, Barksdale is 80 this year, long past the age when most folks have retired to the old porch rocker. But Herbert Barksdale is still going a mile a minute, donating his experience, energy and wisdom freely for the betterment of the county.
He first came to Rappahannock in 1927 as county extension agent. “It's been a long time but farmers in Madison and Rappahannock still talk about the excellent job Mr. Barksdale did,” said Rap Owings who currently holds, the same position.
