Building Inspector
After ignoring legal requirements for a building inspector for the past several years, Rappahannock has been placed on notice that it must comply with state law and enforce Virginia’s housing code. The supervisors, in response, agreed at their November meeting to proceed in hiring an inspector before an avoidable accident occurs or before the county is hit with a citizen suit should be near the top of the board’s priorities for 1980.
Trash Problems
In addition, time for temporizing on the trash problem here is running short. Dumpster sites are few , and far between. Those that we have in Amissville, Huntly and Scrabble are outrageously abused by the public.
History shows that no one is going to come forward and volunteer property for either the trash boxes or a county dump. Local government is legally required to provide a trash disposal site. Rappahannock, by authorizing a privately leased dump closed to the public barely meets the letter of that law and certainly misses the intent of providing residents with a safe, sanitary and convenient trash disposal site. The supervisors must recognize that they may have to face the unenviable task of condeming property for a landfill. It’s not a pleasant job, taking property from a friend or neighbor for public use, but it’s what the board members were elected to do: provide leadership and make decisions for the county.
