6. SperryviUe Bridge
On October 3. the highway department closed the Route 1001 bridge over the Thornton River in SperryviUe. setting off an angry response in the community. Although resident highway engineer Don Askew repeatedly stated that he alone made the decision to close the structure after August flooding left the old wooden deck substantially damaged and unsafe for traffic, village residents continued to blame Piedmont supervisor E. P. Luke for the action.
