Traditionally, January 1 is the date when-folks decide to mend their ways. In the spirit of New Year’s and new beginnings, we offer a few resolutions to Rappahannock’s local governing bodies and boards.
County Government —For the planning commission and the supervisors: Take steps to ensure there’s no repeat of the deceptive legal advertising that preceeded public hearings on the Culpeper Farmers Cooperative’s rezoning request. The notice in the paper didn't include the number of acres involved, the property owner’s name or the proposed use of the land. The land was described only as “Lot A of the Flat Woods Property directly behind the Rappahannock Farmers Cooperative." The planners and the supervisors might have had more public participation in the public hearing process if the public had known what was going on.
—For the chairman of the board of zoning appeals: Tone down tirades against the legal profession. It’s to the point now where attorneys hesitate to appear with their clients before the BZA for fear that the very presence of a lawyer might prejudice the chairman against any request for a variance or special use permit. Lawyers, like the rest of us, have their failings but they don’t deserve being lumped together as liars and railed at publicly for alleged arrogance and incompetency.
