the 1980’s shouldn’t be passed up.
Across the state, the powers that be are beginning to awaken to the dangers of letting thousands and thousands of acres of farm land and open spaces slide into urban uses. The trend in the Virginia General Assembly appears to be toward allowing local governments and local people a greater 'role in decidng their destiny.
In the November 6 elections, our neighbors in Fauquier County raised their voices in a loud and clear message. Two supervisors generally associated with development interests were defeated by opponents who publicly championed controlled growth.
Fauquier has the resources in an excellent planning staff to test the trend in the courts on land use decisions. Our neighbors have the know-how and the will to attempt setting precedents that will give local governments a greater
hand in controlling growth and preserving valuable resources. They can establish case law that will turn a comprehensive plan into the chief factor—or at least one equal to Zoning ordinances—in establishing public policy.

A comprehensive plan may not carry much weight now but we think it will become a much more important guide in the years ahead.
For this reason, we urge all Rappahannock citizens to take part in the community meetings that will begin soon as part of the development of Rappahannock’s first plan. By doing so, you can have a say in the path your county will follow pi to the 1980’s.
