Arthlinda Quaintance, a former teacher herself, also served as a member of the county school board while her sister-in-law was elementary principal and so had the opportunity to work with Mary Botts professionally. “She had the opportunity to work with Mary Botts professionally. “She had the gift of encouraging good spirit among her teachers and got them all working together. She was a good leader,” Arthlinda Quaintance noted.
According to Mrs. Winfrey, Mrs. Quaintance has always sped to the rescue of those less fortunate. She’s given assistance to families in need of medical care and financed treatment for alcoholics willing to “take the cure." When one of her teachers was hospitalized and needed but couldn’t afford a private nurse, the teacher opened a get well card from Mrs. Quaintance and out dropped five $20 bills.
To three generations of children who came under her wing during half a century in Rappahannock Schools, she gave leadership, learning and love. To others, sjie's offered help and understanding. For her generosity of spirit, Mary Botts Quaintance is the Rappahannock News’ Woman of the Year for 1979.
