One of the most active and successful 4-H Clubs that year has been the Livestock Club, which has given local youngsters the opportunity to receive guidance and assistance in raising their own animals and showing them in Culpeper-MadisonRappahannock Farm Show competition.
Randall Updike. Washington farmer and one of the adult leaders of the club, told us that the livestock club in its present form has been active in the county since 1979, although similar clubs have existed in Rappahannock over the years. Besides Updike, the club is led by David Thornhill of Woodville and Linda Owings of Sperryville.
Perhaps because of the success of the members in competition, the club has grown from 10 members at its start to 18 members this year. Updike said most of the members are under 15 and most of them have no other animals except the ones purchased for their 4-H project.
“It would be really difficult for youngsters who don’t live on a farm with an established livestock operation to learn anything about caring for livestock,” Updike said. "This is the training and guidance that we're trying to provide."
