county and across the country, many parents get back into farming or buy their first livestock after working with their children on a 4-H livestock project. "Often the parents learn just as much as the kids,” Updike said. “And they have just as much fun.”
Updike said the livestock club here concentrates on sheep and swine because of the initial investment and feeding costs that would be involved in cattle.
He outlined some of the steps in completing a 4-H livestock project. First, the animals are bought.
The adult leaders do this in April and May, with each member paying for his own lamb or pig. Both market lambs and hogs must be purchased at least 90 days before show time. Those undertaking the competition must be 4-H members or members of FFA. They must attend at least two livestock workshops, which usually are organized by either the .-ounty 4-H club or the district.
Two examples of the kind of workshops offered during the past year were the swine clinic at Slate Mills and the workshop on preparing an animal for show given about a month before the sale.
The members must be responsible for the feeding and care of their animals for the whole 90-day period. “This is to be the kids’ job.
