This week we decided to ask a few seniors how important a part sports have played in their high school lives. Sports were not always considered of major importance to a school system in general, so we hope this report will help to promote a positive view in this area.
Mike Tomko, a five-year member of the cross-country team, has these views on scholastic sports. “Sports have taught me the values of teamwork sportmanship and how to achieve my goals through hard work." We also asked Mike how school life would be different without sports. He had this to say, “Sports aren’t my whole life or major interest but they add diversity to what could otherwise be a monotonous year". Mike has also been on the basketball and track teams for the past 4 years and plans to participate in both again as a senior.
Pam Estes, a noted basketball player, thinks that school alone is not enough. “Sports give me something to look forward to. If sports were annihilated from the school system I would feel a certain sense of emptiness. All the students, in essence, would be equal."
We asked Miss Ann Spieker how she thought the attitudes of the students might change if sports were exempted from the school system. "I think sports motivate a' student academically because if you don’t make the grades you can’t be part of a team. Often there are students who can’t be for their academic excellence, but do turn out to be stars on the court or field. Removing sports would definately cause many students to take a negative outlook toward school".
