Brown told the board members that the building code also required that an expensive 12 inch fire wall extending above the roof ine be installed between the bus shop and office if the facilities are housed in a single pre-engineered metal building, a cost that hadn't been initially figured. Asked it he had any other surprises on compliance with the building code. Brown replied that he didn't think what was originally proposed for the combination building took the code into consideration.
Two Alternatives
As a result of the necessity for including a tire wall in construction plans and in response to higher interior construction costs involved with turning a pre-engineered metal structure into office, space. Brown gave the board two plans: one for a vehicle maintenance facility of preengineered metal with concrete floors and adjoining central office of cinder block and the second for a vehicle maintenance building of preengineered metal with the school board office in a separate building of light residential construction with brick veneer.
But the board wasn't buying any of it. “1 thought we were talking about a Butler-type building (for both the office and the bus shop)." said Nelson Lane.
