Prognosis Revealed
The doctors at Bethesda treating Holmes knew Neilson was his "out-patient doctor and friend" and after consultation, it was decided that the Navy commander was the best person to break the news to the patient and discuss what would have to be done in the way of future nursing care, the navy commander said.
According to Neilson, he didn't tell the colonel about the tumor since test results weren't finished but informed him that the cirrhosis was “really pretty bad" and that his prognosis looked “rather grim”, estimating a two week survival that could stretch to a year under optimal management.
Neilson and Holmes talked about nursing care and where the colonel should go, the doctor continued. The options discussed—either briefly or at length—were to stay at Bethesda, go to his Washington house on Barnaby Street or return to Mary Mellon Orchard in Flint Hill, Neilson said, adding that he argued for the Washington house where Holmes would be near medical facilities and could be kept under closer observation. “He was adament that where he wanted to be was home in Flint Hill," the doctor said. According to Neilson, Holmes indicated he would think the matter over, said he would have to make legal arrangements and asked to continue the discussion the following day.
