Billy Mellon, a iat> technician at the Office of the Attending Physician, testified that he met Holmes at the Capitol dispensary when the colonel came there to see Neilson and had been invited by the colonel to the Flint Hill farm. "Either he liked you or he didn’t," Melton said, describing Holmes as “extremely strong minded.”
He told the court that he drove Holmes to the city on October 8 for his last hospital admission, stopping at Tom Lee's apple shed on the way to inquire about getting pickers for the crop at Mary Mellon Orchard. Later, Melton said, he brought a suitcase with papers to the hospital and subsequently saw the colonel working on papers. He visited the colonel regularly during that last hospitalization and found Holmes mentally alert but depressed. "He became more and more insistent on going back to the farm after he found out he was dying," noted Melton, who now manages the orchard and whose son works and lives at the farm.
