No 13th Floor Belief that the number thirteen is unlucky is so widely held that most hotels, apartment buildings and office buildings omit the thirteenth floor and have no room numbers containing thirteen. Many airlines do not have a flight 13 and no seats with that number. In Paris, that number is not even used in houses - the numbering skips from 12 to 14.
Superstitious people in this country were appalled when, in 1980, the Apollo mission that year was numbered Apollo 13. Launched on April 11, the spacecraft had to cancel its moon mission when an oxygen tank exploded on the thirteenth and the crew used the landing module as a lifeboat on the trip back to earth.
In Britain, brides choose the day of their wedding from several rhymes, remembered from folklore. Although they are contradictory, they agree that Friday is not a good day for a wedding:
