Peyton, who said her favorite subject was arithmetic. remembers that in her day times were hard for most Of the children in the school. “No, it was different then from how kids are today,” she said. “We each had two dresses and when we got home from school Mama washed our dresses and we wore the other one the next day. Mama also made all of our underwear - folks just didn’t buy things then.”
In spite of the hard times. Peyton said that the children had fun in school: “We had Mayday, with games and singing, we played ball here. Most of us had work to do at home, but we always tried to do our homework. Mrs. Green saw to that." She also encouraged children to stay in school, in spite of family demands on their time. “A lot of children w ho went here grew up and left," Peyton said. "Me, 1 never left.” Peyton had “the fever" when she was four and it kept her weak as she grew up. Among her fifteen brothers and sisters were three sets of twins. They lived farther down the road from the school, but close enough so that walking there was no problem.
