started through the snow for Mr. John A. Smith’s, where we spent the night. The next morning we left there and went to Mrs. Jane Butler’s, who had always been a kind triend of ours. We stayed tour or five days. From there we left and went to Mr. Richard Thornhill's. He gave us a job of breaking his tlax. We broke and swingled his crop of flax. We then left and knocked about the neighborhood until the last of February.

1 tried evervw here to rent a house, but could not. About the last of February, Mr. Thornhill and w ife said if we would build ■ a house, they would give us a place. 1 went immediately to see a neighbor about some logs. He asked me 12*/i cents a piece for old field pine, and I told him I would if I could do no better. I then went to see Mr. Romine who gave me the logs, but I did not get quite enough. Mr. Thornhill furnished the balance. The first day of March I cut them with what 1 could do. and with the assistance of Mr. Thornhill, by fall 1 had a comfortable little house.
On the next new year we moved in. and felt once more that 1 was in a house of our own. We got along without any trouble for about five years, in that time 1 found that my eye-sight was failing me.
