Bear Poacher

According to information received from Robert R. Jacobsen, Shenandoah National Park Superintendent, Neil G. Wood, 28. of Waynesboro was sentenced to 90 days in jail, three-years probation and was fined S500 for poaching.
Wood was arrested by Park Rangers and a Virginia State Game Warden on November 7, 1981, while attempting to shoot a bear confined in a homemade trap located in the Sawmill Run section of the Park.
Wood was also charged with trapping and possession of a weapon in the Park. He was tried on July 22. 1982, before U. S. Magistrate Glen E. Conrad in U. S. District Court.
Jacobsen said that, "this section should curtail at least one longstanding poaching operation in the Park.” He also said that, “anyone having information concerning suspicious or illegal activities may report it confidentially by calling the office of the Chief Park Ranger at 703-999-2243."
