With only two teachers - one for each side - students had to be divided into groups to work independently. ‘‘Of course, sometimes the older students helped teach the younger ones," Peyton said. The school remained basically a two-room school serving eight grades until it was sold in the early sixties.
“1 remember my school days well." Peyton said. "Those were happy days for me. Of course, 1 never ever thought then that I'd be living here.”
Now the old cloakroom w here ice cream was served is a second bedroom and the door that used to separate the upper and lower schools has been replaced by a wall. The kitchen area was divided in half to provide a kitchen for each tenant. Lilly Peyton has filled up the large rooms with flowers and pictures. But ou'side the old sliding board, covered with leaves, still stands to remind her of the hundreds of children w ho once slid down its shiny back during a break from Mrs. Green's stringent instruction.
