Election Effects "Look at what’s happening," said Randolph. "II Dick Davis wins the Senate race this year, the post of lieutenant governor will he vacant, and there's nothing which says it has to he filled. So Attorney General Jerry Baliles will he next in line for the governorship. Then if Robb becomes vice president, Baliles would become governor in 1985. He wouldn't have been elected to the office, so he could run for re-election that year. It would he the first time in the history of the world that a Virginia governor has run to succeed himself in a popular election.
“Not only that, but if Baliles became governor, the Democrat General Assembly would elect an attorney general to till out the last months of his term. So the Republicans might he up against an incumbent attorney general and an incumbent governor in the '85 elections. Worse yet. the Assembly Democrats might elect a woman attorney general to replace Baliles. I understand Del. Mary Sue Terry of Stuart is already thinking about the job."
“But Randolph," I asked, "these are all pretty moderate people—hardly wild-eyed liberals—what wjll the independents like you be doing?”
"A good question." he conceded. "It will mean many hours of soulsearching at the Club under the portrait of General Lee. We will take communion and meditate as we search for our right and proper course."
