“He knew he d get paddled every day." she said. "He just wore three or tour pairs of pants.” Other methods employed Mrs. Green were making the unruly children stand on one foot and stationing them in a corner until they calmed down. “Mrs. Green was married to a barber up on Gay Street." Peyton said. "She was sort of a principal as well as a teacher.”
Peyton said that the school served black children from around Washington as well as back in the nearby hollows. “Not many folks had horses, and of course, no one had a car.” she said. “Children walked miles to get here and get back home again."
Mrs. Green was lucky that none of Peyton’s other siblings displayed the same propensity for fighting as her one brother. Peyton was one of sixteen children, not all of whom survived. “Not only that, but my father had sixteen children by his first wife,” she said. Between them, they must have almost tilled up both rooms of the school, which in its time served about one hundred children. No lunch was served when Peyton attended, but a kitchen was added later so that children could have a hot lunch. "We did have ice cream, though," she said. “The teachers kepi it on ice in the cloak room.”
