Three Crooks When the court reconvened out of the presence of the jury early Friday Nielson’s attorney. Roland Hartshorn, voiced sharp criticism of tactics used by the plaintiff's lawyers, charging that they’d contacted and attempted to intimidate witnesses and had told people in the Rappahannock community that “the other side is represented by three of the biggest crooks in the country."
He characterized the contention that the will had been fraudulently altered as “theories of imagination and air castles” and asked the judge to “throw the daydreams out” and try the case properly.
Konick categorically denied calling Hartshorn, Luke or George Davis crooks. He acknowledged discussing the case with Dot Irvine, a mutual friend and former employee of Davis and Luke who did some typing work tor the defendants in the case. Konick recalled telling her “before you get involved any further, I think you should know what you’re helping.”
