He noted that when the colonel was hospitalized as a result of those black-outs in 1966, he was given an electroencephlagram (EEG) which showed on abnormal brainwave. A spinal tap also turned up abnormal, Harvey said.
Then in 1973, Holmes was admitted to Bethesda with cerebral arteriosclerosis, hardening of the arteries to the brain, the doctor said. By that time, he noted, the colonel had developed a neurogenic bladder, another sign of brain impairment.
During that 1973 hospitalization-, neurological testing showed that the colonel had trouble remembering three objects for five minutes, difficulty counting backward from 100 by sevens and exhibited a drift in one arm when asked to hold both arms straight in front of him with his eyes closed, Harvey said. Then in 1979, the liver disfunction that was eventually diagnosed as cancer allowed poisons to be carried by the blood stream to the brain while at the same time, the malfunction in the liver deprived the brain of food, according to Harvey,
