the jail will have a sprinkler system in the cell blocks. The Department of Corrections has approved the elimination but only with authorization from the local building inspector. Under an agreement with Fauquier County, its building official does the actual inspecting here while local Zoning Administrator David Konick administers Rappahannock’s building inspection program.
Konick told the supervisors that Fauquier’s inspector wrote him that he wouldn’t approve the sprinkler elimination, overruling the move that could cut $40,000 from renovation costs. But Konick added that, according to architect Hunter Spencer, Fauquier’s inspector didn’t tell him no; just that he “would rather have the sprinklers.”
Gilkey volunteered to meet with the architect, Konick and the Fauquier inspector to explain that there’s nothing in the cell block that can catfch fire except the prisoners and matresses and that the town of Washington’s water system is inadequate to supply the sprinklers. As an alternative to the sprinkler system, a requirement of the state building code, the board is proposing installation of hoses and smoke detectors.
