Grosso, a fresh man with great promise, according to coach Ann Spieker, took third.
Cindy Williams, a senior out for track for the first time this year, heaved the discus 115 feet and three inches for the blue ribbon. “That’s a excellent distance for a first meet. It could easily place her in the state,” noted the coach. Marie Davis and Donna Williams completed another sweep for Rappahannock by throwing for second and third in the event. Weaver and Williams were also second and third in the shot put.
In the distance events, Karen Ludwick, another promising freshman trackster, was second in the mile and first in the two mile. Ann Tupper was second in the 880 and Brenda Walker, a sophomore who coach Spieker sees as demonstrating good potential, was second in the 440.
Rams Break Tie
The Rams evened the score by squeeking past the Panther boys in the final events of a close meet.
With the tally tied and two races left, Strasburg delighted the home fans with a win in the two mile to inch ahead by one point. It all hinged on the mile relay. Eight seconds meant the difference as the Rams’ foursome finished in 3:48.5 while Rappahannock’s boys crossed the line in 3:56.
Coming back from regional and state placings in the top ten last year, RCHS junior Scott Keithley was first in the mile with Ronnie Atkins right on his heels for second. The duo finished two-three in the two mile.
Doyle Dunn stopped at 5’10” in the high jump to compete in the triple jump. But it was enough for the blue, “He could have gone i higher,” Spieker reported. Dunn was first in the triple
