by Sally Cunningham and Mike Brown (third and fourth place finishers), jumped a board fence across an open field to the northwest. One passage of about a mile could not be avoided as it ran along Battle Run with dense woods on the other side of the trail. Here the divergent parties met head on and a lot of whooping and hollering echoed through the valley. It was reported that Michael Power of Warrenton dove his horse off a bank and into the startled oncoming riders. But all went well and the course was run in 10:15 by winner Allan Olson—a surprisingly fast time considering weather and hilly terrain.
