Whenever a family member dies, survivors in the Rappahannock area should inquire to see if Social Security benefits may be payable on the record of the deceased, Bruce A. Hundley, Social Security manager in Culpeper, said recently. It is so important to check promptly because, in some cases, benefits cannot be paid before the month an application is filed. This is true for widows and widowers who wish to start benefits before they reach age 65. If the worker has enough credit for work covered by Social Security, benefits can be paid to: — Unmarried children under age 18. — Unmarried children age 18-19 if full time secondary students. — Over 18 if disabled before age 212. — A mother or father caring for a child under age 16 or disabled. — A widow or widower age 60 or older. — A disabled widow or widower age 50-60. — A dependent parent age 62 or older. A surviving divorced spouse yan also receive benefits as an aged or disabled survivor if the marriage lasted 10 years or more. This time limit does not apply to a divorced spouse caring for an eligible child under age 16 or one who is disabled. In addition there is a $255 lump sum death benefit that can be paid to an eligible widow or widower, or if none, to an entitled child. When applying, it is helpful for the person to have certain records available including the worker’s Social Security card or a record of the number, proof of age for all applicants, proof of marriage for widows and widowers, proof of the workers death, W-2 forms for the last two years or self employment tax returns, and proof of support for dependent parents. Do not delay applying if all these proofs are not available. People at the Social Security office may be able to suggest substitutes. Thanksgiving Closings The following businesses and county offices will be closed due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Rappahannock County schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday. Rappahannock County government offices willl be closed Thursday and Friday; this includes the county’s Social Services Department.
Family Guidance Sendees of Rappahannock will be closed Thursday and Friday. In case of emergency, clinic staff may be reached by calling 675-3329.
The Rappahannock County Library will be closed on Thursday. The Rappahannock National Bank in Washington and the Farmers and Merchants National Bank in ^lint Hill will be closed on Thursday. The news and business offices of the Rappahannock News will be closed Thursday but will open for regular business hours on Friday.
