More than 1700 Virginians have not claimed Federal income tax refund checks now being held by the Internal Revenue Service. The 1,739 checks total $678,389 — an average of $390. An IRS spokesperson said the refund checks range in amount from $1 to $7,849.
The refund checks have been returned to IRS as “undeliverable” by the U.S. Postal Service. Individuals who move and leave no forwarding address and provide incomplete or incorrect information the the return itself are the persons whose refund checks become undeliverable, according to the spokesperson.
Individuals should be prepared to tell the taxpayer assistor their social security number and address.
Checks cannot by picked up at any local IRS office. They must be mailed to the individual or an authorized representative An executor or administrator can arrange the release of a refund made out to a deceased taxpayer.
The IRS also points out that individuals can minimize delivery problems with future income tax refunds by reporting any address changes to the Internal Revenue Service and their local postmaster.
