A Virginia tradition continues on Saturday, Feb. 29 as steeplechasing comes to Sperryville for the Rappahannock Hunt Point-to-Point.
Held at Thornton Hill Farm on U.S. 522, the full day of racing will begin at 10 a.m. with hunter pace events. Timber and flat races make up the card of eight races (splits are expected). The day’s grand finale will be the ever-popular Jack Bruce Memorial Hound Race.
Racing fans can watch horses and their jockeys battle to the finish from atop the hillside at the spectator-friendly course.
General admission is $5 and reserved parking is still available.
In the featured owner-rider timber race, a test of about 2V-i miles, a top field of seven was attracted, all pursuing Seven Corners series points. Unquestionably, Henry Wood’s Topeador is the one to catch in the headliner. The Chilean-bred horse carried Mr. Wood with distinction last year, when he won.
Racing insiders pause, however, to consider rumors of splint-bone problems of the 11-year-old campaigner. Named Timber Horse of the Year with six *91 triumphs, Topeador tuned-up on the flat at Casanova Feb. 22, running an undistinguished eighth in a field of twelve.
