“Thank you for sharing your talents. Excellent!” This was a sincere expression of appreciation from one of the professional judges at the Lion’s Club Bland Music program Sunday afternoon. We must wholeheartedly concur.
Eleven student musicians entertained an audience filled with family, friends, faculty and fellow students in the high school auditorium at the successful consummation of this years Lion’s Bland Music Competition. It was much more than a contest. It was a real “live” concert that shared talent and music that held the attention and stimulated enthusiastic applause.
The judges on the distinguished panel said they were pleasantly surprised at the quality of performance. Two of the students premiered original compositions: Jason Fox sang his attractive song “Little Man” and accompanied himself on guitar; Matthew Payne, the youngest musician at 13 years, performed “When I Look Through That Window” on piano. We applaud their creativity and would eryoy hearing more from them in the future.
The first place “gold” for vocalist went to Jennifer Foster, last year’s Bland winner, who applied her clear soprano voice to “Bring Him Home.”
First place for instrumentalist was awarded to Diana Wise for her skillful rendition of Grieg’s “An den Fruhling.” Silver in the two categories was earned by Alice Reeve, alto, who sang “On My Own,” another winner from last year; and by Matthew Payne, the eighth grade composer.
Bronze third place awards went to Heather Rossiter, soprano, who sang “Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again,” and to Teresa Hudson, who played “Bergermask” by Koepke, unaccompanied, on the flute. Most other songs were accompanied very skillfully by Melinda Russell at the piano.
Certificates and prizes were awarded to these young musicians at the regular dinner meeting, hosted by the Lion’s, on Wednesday evening at the Washington VFD.
