The ladies timber race is co-featured at Rappahannock and could provide the day’s top finish. Jill Waterman and her Nomoniker ran stride-for-stride with Ready Snodgrass and Tom’s War at Casanova last week. Nomoniker proved strongest at the wire, but Tom’s War was knocking at the winner’s door. Miss Waterman, though, might instead bring out her “hole card” in Worthy Key, who is also entered. Worthy Key was the 1991 foxhunter’s series champion, though he has not run yet this season.
Spoilers of a repeat duel in the ladies’ heat include 1991 ladies champion Dawn Dugan on Oliver’s Tiger and Sara Laimbeer on her Courtly Bee. Miss Dugan said that trainer Oliver Brown actually trains his horses over the Rappahannock course. She reasoned that Oliver’s Tiger thus has the tactical advantage of knowing how to handle the tight, right-handed bends.
The open timber event over 2Vz miles drew only five entrants, but the field is evenly matched. Standout runners should be Palace Party with Michael Traurig up and Friendly Retreat with Don Yovanovich up.
