In the maiden timber race, Sea Dent, who raced third two weeks ago, and Duke Kahana Moku head the field of nine non-winners.
The foxhunter’s timber race also drew nine entrants. Last year’s foxhunter’s timber winner Roman Tent, under then-owner Nicolas Schweitzer, will race for new owner James Whitner. Veteran Harry Wight, who just missed winning at Casanova, has entered his Fire’s Transition in the 2,'A mile 'chase.
Two flat races are offered on the full Rappahannock card. In the five-furlong dash, English-bred Lanhydrock with owner William Russell up, may be at a disadvantage over Thornton Hill’s speed-favoring strip.
Saturday’s races will have everybody looking skyward to determine which hand mother nature will play. If the weather remains clear and the track fast, it will be hard to pick between multiple winner Lanhydrock and the other 23 entries. The foreign runner won only once in 1991, in the hock-deep mud at the Piedmont Point-to-Point in March, possibly showing a liking for deep going.
