style of painting has been inspired by Renaissance paintings which consist of a large central image surrounded by little paintings around the edge. i
A special part of Ms. Marshall’s gallery opening will be a reading of some of her recent writings about the people in the show, “Stories From the Dust in the Comer,” at 4 p.m. These stories will be read by Tutt Harris and Nan Reddick. In the fall, they will be the subject of a dance performance at Sally Nash’s Workspace for Choreographers in Sperryville.
Ms. Marshall has been working on some of these paintings as an artist-in-residence at Rappahannock County Elementary School. She sets up the painting in the hallway on her easel, and while painting, children can come up and watch her paint and ask questions.
Ms. Marshall received her undergraduate degree from Antioch College in History and Education and received her master’s degree in Community Art from Beacon College. She has studied painting at the Art Students’ League in New York and also from her artist husband, Rex Slack. She is one of the founding members of Middle St. Gallery.
Ms. Marshall teaches art history and fine arts at the Fauquier Center of Lord Fairfax Community College. She also has put on several visual learnings workshops for Polaroid.
Her art has been shown in New York, Washington, D.C., and is included in collections in Colombia, Md., the former Yugoslavia, South Africa and New York.
