The RCHS softball team had an exciting opening game against Luiray last week, beating them 20-4.

Leah Marlett had an outstanding game and batted 1.000. She hit one home run, a triple, two doubles and a single.

Other top hitters were Marsha Freeman, Courtney Welch, Cari Kerr and Cyndi Welch, who all hit three out of five. Bonnie Jewell, Dietrich Beaver and Laura McNear hit two out of four. ; Coach Renee Leake said, “Amy Payne pitched really well. She is expected to be the number one pitcher this year and has shown great improvement.” Leah Marlett came in to pitch in the fifth inning of this game, and struck out three out of four.

The girls’ game against Strasburg last Friday was not so successfill. RCHS lost 26-6, after being behind 6-6 in the third inning. Coach Leake said, "We had nine errors in the game and you cannot win with that. They were on routine plays which we usually get.”

Amy Payne, Leah Marlett, Dietrich Beaver and Shamita Fletcher all: pitched in this game. Strasburg had 12 hits to RCHS’s ten. ‘The breakdown on defense is what lost the game,” said Coach Leake.

The next home game will be against Manassas Park on Monday ■Utr5p.ni.

After just one track and field Meet, Jason Waters and Mark Jenkins have garnered enough points to earn letters. Jason has 13 points, and Mark has 12. Ten points are required for a letter. —At the meet against Page County High School and Randolph Macon Academy last week, Dawn Havstad placed first in the discus by throwing a distance of 6941/2, and Sarah Gently placed second. Dawn also placed Agpond in the shotput.

•In the men’s field events, Willie Shanks finished second in the long jump with a distance of 191/2. Jason liters cleared 5-6 in the high jump
