Library Funding
The $9,076 increase in county funds requested by the Library Board is a large increase in percentage terms, but hardly a large increase in dollars.
If it is granted the county will be spending $50,781 for library services, less than one cent of the tax rate.
Most of the increase is to continue the services of an employee who was hired using state grant funds to help in the computerization of library records. While the grant funds will run out, the need will not.
Library director Nicki Lynch has said she finds employee’s service very valuable. Most library patrons and volunteers agree.
We agree and hope the Board of Supervisors will approve the library’s budget.
However, we also feel that some time soon the Library Board needs to look at the way the library is staffed. Mrs. Lynch is employed full time. With the additional position, the library is also employing three people on a part-time basis. Added together the three cover 56 hours a week.
It might make better sense to employ two people full time, to offer two reasonably decent jobs instead of one decent job and three piddling ones.
We believe this can be done without an increase to the budget.
