provided for Operation Safe Haven will not be continued in the next school year and .1 am greatly disturbed by this prospect. Surely the parents in Rappahannock County are not aware of the extent of services provided by this grant or there would be a much greater response for its support.
As a parent of a high school child and an employee of Family Guidance Services, I have been exposed to the great many problems facing our school children today. Many parents are not aware of the seriousness of these problems. Every child is touched in some way by them.
This grant provides the funding for positions which are desperately needed in our school system. Susan Fox, At Risk coordinator; Kim Harris, social worker; Dave van de Graaff, ISS Instructor; and Dawn Bare, Administrative Aide have been working very closely with our * children, and with great success in helping our children with a variety of problems. These people are trained to recognize potential problems with studnets. They provide conseling and friendship to allow the children to trust adults. They help prevent students from dropping out of school, provide education on substance abuse (a much larger problem than parents realize) and help counsel students on stress managements, peer pressure, self-esteem and many other problems our children face today.
I have seen the results first hand of the services provided by Oepration Safe Haven, and I am absolutely sure than it is necessary for our school students. The program is working! We need it for our students. I am sure that if this grant is not continued, our children will suffer greatly.
