Why do you think so many people are home schooling or sending tKfeir children to private school? Not because they value the hassle of driving distances to take their children to school or the hassle of having their children home all day. Hotne schooling mothers get very littfe time off. It is because they see that public education is not doing the job and they fear for their children’s future. ! '
Public education should speak to all the various needs in the education of our children. However, if one looks at all the studies done by the various foundations in this countfy, public education seems to value gadgetry and mediocrity more than anything else.
Perhaps the tax payers out here will be more interested when *we hear about good programs being added instead subtracted. Yes, I know the school board promised the Supervisors not to ask for funding for the Safe Haven program. Can't you just say, we blew it and this is too important to let go?
I cannot imagine what will happen to the drop our rate if this program is ended. What will happerCto all those young people who rely 'pp someone to guide them in coping with school, a less than perfect home environment, and peer pressure? Who will remind these young peopip that you go nowhere without at lefqt a high school diploma? Who will encouraged them to go on to higher education? Granted teachers are dofitlg some of this, but there is a level qf need that requires a Susan Fox assisting teachers in these endeavors.It
simply defies explanation as tp why our School Board and the administration is not out on the husiings selling this program to the public. We do not have any children in this school system. Our only chfijl is a grown man, but there must be others like us who see the value «f such a program and may be willing to add a few cents to the tax burdejp to pay for it. j
While we must pay for school additions and better sewage treatment, none of these will be worth anything if our at risk children, and in this day and age nearly all children are at risk, cannot seek thfe help they need to complete their e<|ucation.
