Last Friday, a 39 year-old Rappahannock man was found guilty of sexually abusing his 14 year-old daughter during the early morning hours of January 1, 1995.
The jury trial began on Thursday morning. By 5:40 p.m., all testimony had been heard and closing arguments concluded, and the jury of eight women and four men began their deliberations. By 8 p.m., they had not reached a decision, and sent a note out to the judge saying that they wanted fooct and drink. That note was followed by a note saying that they thought they were a hung jury (that they could not reach a unanimous dedsipn). _ - Judge W. Shore Robertson advised the jury of the “Allen Charge,” a juror’s instruction which directs members of the jury to reach a verdict if possible. A verdict must be unanimous
