A new license plate with an artistic flair will offer Virginia motorists an opportunity to brighten their vehicles while providing funding for the arts.

Authorized by the 1996 General Assembly, the Virginians for the Arts license plate will be produced following a statewide design competition and the receipt of the first 350 prepaid orders.

“This is a true milestone for the arts in Virginia. We’re proud to take our place among conservation, the Chesapeake Bay and the many other worthy causes that our citizens support through the purchase of special license plates,” said Carlton P. Hardy II of Newport News, a board member of Virginians for the Arts (VFTA) and the leader of the license plate effort.

A statewide arts advocacy group, VFTA is sponsoring a design competition and offering a $500 cash prize to the winner. Designs will be judged on creativity, clarity and visual impact. For further design specifications, contact VFTA at (804) 644-2737. The deadline for entries is July 19.
