His attorney, T.C. Lea, argued that the girl’s mother had encouraged her to make up the story about her father abusing her. He said that the girl was told to stick to her story or else she would be sent to reform school. Mr. Lea said, “We feel this is a fabrication that has been cooked up by the mother for revenge against the father.”
In closing arguments, Mr. Luke said the victim got up in front of 12 people she did not know and the press and told what happened during the early morning of January 1. “Who would go through that?” he asked.
He said the victim was tom, that she still loved her father, but she knew that what he did was wrong.
Mr. Lea told the jury that their job was to judge the credibility pf tjjie witnesses. Speaking of the daughter, he said “The tears came when she felt she needed to have them.”
After the jury delivered their finding of guilt for the sexual abuse charge, they were sent back to the jury room for phase two of their job as jurors — to decide the defendant’s sentence, after being told of his prior criminal record.

State Trooper M.C. Woodard charged Mr. Davis with reckless driving, No injuries were reported, but Mr. Redman’s car had $500 damage and Mr. Davis’s pickup had $1,^000 damage.
, Last Thursday at 5:20 p.m. on Route 522, 1/2 mile south of U.S. 211, Joyce Ann Smoot, 37, of Washington, was charged by Trooper C. Moore with following too closely. Ms. Smoot was driving a 1996 Pontiac 2-door and ran into the back of a 1990 Ford pickup driven by Joseph Miller Martin Jr., 44, of Strasburg, while he was stopped in the road preparing to turn into a driveway.
Mr. Martin’s vehicle had $200 Jfecn&ge and Ms. Smooths had $4T500. No injuries were reported. “•*■«*•**”>■*.
At 5:50 last Thursday evening, two vehicles sideswiped on a curve onJlQUte 729, dne mile south of 35S5TJ22. The drtverS^volvfflrw&ST David Floyd Ellis, 34, of Orlean, driving a 1991 Ford pickup and Edward Arnold Wince, 46, of Flint Hill, driving a 1981 Ford pickup. No one was charged in the accident which was investigated by Trooper C.A. Moore, and no injuries were reported. Mr. Wince’s pickup had $500 damage and Mr. Ellis’s had $1,000.
