take advantage of the street food vendors selling papaya salad, noodles, unidentified fried grubs and beetles, and what to me look like chicken embryos but are not. With a friend one day on a “photo shoot” at the large market near us, we were offered a fried larvae; we looked at each other and popped them in our mouths. A little too squishy in the middle for my taste, but hey, we cannot merely sit back and just take pictures. After much discussion in my miserable Thai I find they are silkworm larvae.
You know I could go on and on. I haven’t even mentioned my trip to Burma with another potter in search of village potteries. We jeeped deep into the mountainous Chin Hills, newly opened to foreigners; in 1962 all foreigners and especially the missionaries were kicked out. This was a Star Trek kind of experience — “to go boldly where no foreigner has gone in 34 years,” to step out on another planet where you can breathe oxygen and the aliens speak English.
People here are 95 percent Christian in this Buddhist part of the world and many speak English. They were all eager to practice their English with “real” English speakers as well as to invite us to preach in their tiny churches; they assume we were missionaries come back. But we were only potters looking for pots.
