Any individual who suspects a child is being abused or neglected may make a report to the Department of Social Services (DSS). This may be done anonymously.

Many people are required * by law to report to DSS any suspected child abuse or neglect that they have learned of in their professional capacity. These persons include:

Persons licensed to practice medicine or any of the healing • arts; hospital -residents or interns; persons employed in * the nursing profession; persons employed as social workers; probation officers; teachers or other persons employed in a public or private school, kindergarten or nursery school; persons providing full or part, time child care for pay on a regular basis; accredited , Christian Science practitioners; mental health professionals; law enforcement officers; professional staff persons employed by a public or private hospital, institution or facility in which children are placed; ary mediator eligible to receive court referrals according to the Code of Virginia; and any person associated with or employed by any private organization responsible for the
