Acting on the budget for next year on Monday night the Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to cut ;<fby $91,500 and reduce the tax rate from the advertised 75 cents per hundred for real estate to 73 cents per hundred. That is still a four-cent increase over this year’s rate.
Although the revenue side was reduced as well, the budget shows a $355 surplus for the next year.
The largest cut was $38,000 for a real estate reassessment. The supervisors decided that could be done out of the general fund surplus rather than taxing for. it.
The next largest cut was $16,000 from the Sheriff’s budget to replace the van inherited from the school system several years ago. The Sheriff is also requesting two new cars this year on a schedule that calls for two cars one year and one the next. “I’m in favor of deleting the van and buying two cars,” said Piedmont district representative Charles K. “Pete” Estes. “We’re in a cycle. Maybe next year we can get one car and a van.”
Sheriff Gary Settle said, “We’ve answered almost 300 more calls compared to this time last year.” This is putting more mileage on the cars, he said.
Chairman Hubert Gilkey said he would go along with cutting the van this year and hoping to get one next year, but he added, “The Sheriff’s
