Also cut was $8,000 from contracted care of animals at the shelter, the amount the Rappahannock Animal Welfare League had requested as an increase. That still leaves the county paying $12,000 to RAWL for taking care of the dogs at the shelter. “They got a tremendous increase last year,” Mr. Estes said.
Another $5,000 was cut from the Extension service. Extension had J requested a nearly 24 percent increase of $ 11,000 in the proposed budget. The funds cut would have paid the county’s share of having an agent in Fauquier for the Master Gardener program.
“They took away the only thing we value,” Mr. Estes said of the extension program. He said citizens used to be able to get advice on problems from local agriculture agents, but the “area programming” concept in extension means that citizens have to go outside the county for such advice.
The supervisors cut $4,500 from the budget for maintaining county » buildings expecting that less mainte- ' nance will be required next year than this one. Also cut was $10,000 for the Planning Commission to contract for studies since that amount will be left in the current budget at the end of8the fiscal year.
