Thirty-three children ages 5 to 9 spent much of last week in Donn Hackney’s First Annual Rookie Baseball Camp, and they have Tshirts identifying them as “Future Panthers” to prove it.
The groups were divided into three teams, blue, gold and purple, and each group worked with one of this year’s varsity baseball players. Tommy Settle worked with aspiring pitchers and catchers. Griffin Ward, Danny Digges and Adam Bouffard each worked with one of the groups.
They started the day in one-inning scrimmages for two teams and basic drills for the other. Then they switched around.
After eating bag lunches while watching videos, they had brief quizzes on baseball trivia. The prize for getting the right answer was a baseball pin. They answered such questions as. Where did the Orioles play before Camden Yards was built? (Memorial Stadium), Who is the major league pitcher with the use of only one arm? (Jim Abbott), and Who wears #10 on the Panthers baseball team? (Coach Settle).
One of the major hits of the day followed — sliding practice on “slip and slide.”
