To his dying day, Byrd fought desegregation along with his followy ers, and as noted journalist Ralph McGill said, “The worst of the demagogues, the ugliest of passions and prejudices were given dignity and status by the stand of the Byrd machine.”
Yet for all that it cannot be denied that Henry Byrd Sr. fostered in Virginia government that was honest to the core and the most fiscally responsible in the nation. His policies were conservative but mirrored the conservative politics of his mostly rural constituency. No doubt Byrd would be appalled if he were around to see the direction of government at the state and national levels today.
