Jackson District representative Ron Frazier suggested early in the budget discussion that funds for travel be cut from most of the budgets, starting with the Board of Supervisors.
County Administrator John McCarthy explained the supervisors are reimbursed for travel from home to regularly scheduled meetings. The funds have occasionally also been" used for attendance at conferences, he said, but usually they are not all spent.
Ms. Bruce said she uses her travel allowance to attend conferences.
“If it’s not required, I don’t think we should be charging the taxpayers for it,” Mr. Frazier said.
“Most of the Constitutional Officers go to several meetings a year. Nobody says we have to go, but I feel we would be at risk if we didn’t go,” Ms. Bruce said.
